Nias

The second stop on our North Sumatra trips, after we make our way through the Telos, is usually Nias. Steeped in surf history, Nias is home to one of the world’s most iconic waves – Lagundri Bay – a perfect right-hand barrel framed by palm trees and tropical beauty. But beyond the fame lies a rugged island with a handful of incredible, lesser-known waves waiting to be explored.

Lagundri Bay is still an amazing wave, possibly even better thanks to the lift from the 2004 earthquake. But it is often very crowded with locals and tourists from every part of the world, so we usually only make surgical strike missions when we think we can get it uncrowded. Gone from the bottom of the Bay, except on the most extreme high tides, is The Machine, a ruler-edge perfect barreling left-hander with a Teaupoo-like bend in the end. Rumor has it it still works once in a blue moon.

Away from Lagundri, Sumatran Surfariis has spent years uncovering Nias’ hidden gems, from the fast, barreling right we call Rockstars to playful walls up north at Afulu. Several hidden gems require the right wind, swell, and tide, but our crew has it completely dialed. While the island isn’t as wave-dense as the Mentawais or Telos, when the conditions line up, it can be unforgettable.

Nias also offers a deeper sense of adventure — rich local culture, warm and welcoming villages, and fascinating history. Whether you’re chasing that legendary right or exploring new possibilities with our experienced crew, Nias delivers a surf experience that’s raw, authentic, and steeped in soul.
