Hinakos

Just off the west coast of Nias lies the Hinako Islands — a remote chain known for power, size, and raw beauty. This is where the ocean shows its muscle, producing heavy, Hawaiian-style waves like Asu and Bawa, both capable of delivering long, powerful rides and serious barrels when the conditions line up.

The Hinakos are typically the 2nd or 3rd destination on our North Sumatran trips. Our guests usually go up there for one of two reasons: first, as a swell magnet that will pick up decent size and grunt even when the Telos or nearby areas are small or flat. Or, second, as a place to push and challenge themselves on some of the heavier waves the Indian Ocean has to offer.

While both breaks changed after the early 2000s earthquake, they still fire on their day, and Sumatran Surfariis has discovered several lesser-known spots in the area for when you want to surf away from the crowds.

The Hinakos are best suited to experienced surfers chasing something wilder and more challenging. It’s one of the few places where your shortboards tend to stay in the racks while you pull out something with more length and volume.

After the 2004 quake and tsunami, we provided a ton of aid to the villagers in Asu and Bawa. The aid effort strengthened long-standing local connections and deep respect for the community. We’re always welcomed back—and when it all comes together out here, it’s pure magic.
