Am back at home and at work (L) and trying desperately to hold the buzz of the trip. Just a quick note to say see ya and thanks as we obviously didn’t catch up before we left. The trip was a blast. I had ridiculously high expectations and they were comfortably met. Can’t wait to get the pics and vid from Grant – will no doubt spend hours replaying it all.
Gawd knows what the future will bring but I seriously hope I get to do another trip on the mahogany in the years ahead. The whole trip was a great reminder that life is about experiences not stuff – and experiences don’t come much better than two weeks on the ‘Hog’!
A personal highlight for me was on the second last day finally feeling 25+ years of cobwebs and limited surf time get washed away – I seriously haven’t surfed like that in decades!!
So thanks Scuzz, you and the guys provided a fantastic experience – it was grand to ‘live the dream’ for two weeks.

Hi Scuzz, it’s Geoff and Marty from the trip finishing today. Sitting at Jakarta airport so thought it would be great to shoot some feedback while fresh in the memory banks.
Firstly thanks for being so professional in both replying to my feedback last year and more importantly resolving any of the opportunities that presented.
Yu was once again a Stella guide putting us on waves with as minimal a crowd as humanly possible. The combination of knowledge and humility he has really struck a chord with all of us on the trip. Legend!
Tulung was the best cook we have ever had on a trip and a great investment for you and the business. Food was incredible.
All other crew and captain were outstanding. Always approachable, reliable, perceptive and managed to build great rapport with all of us.
Boat was comfortable and we are very happy we swapped with the buddy. Your whole fleet is well appointed and makes complete sense for a surf charter operation. You can see the thought that has gone into it.
People are always quick to complain but when credit is due, pay it! That’s what we are doing now. Congratulations! Thanks for a great trip again.

The Best Trip Ever…
How are you mate? I hope all has gone well for you. It’s been a week now that I’ve been home and l’m still surfed out from my time on the Mahogany.
I want to thank you and the crew for the amazing hospitality that you showed me. It truly is PARADISE up there and being able to experience it from aboard the Mahogany was the best possible way. Fede was an outstanding choice for the photographer and I am still blown away by his work ethic.
I had a look at the secret left on YouTube, WOW what a sick wave that is. I definitely want to do another trip on the Mahogany with you and the crew in the future. Until next time Scuzz take care and say g’day to Soojut for me.
Thanks Tinso (Australia, July, 2017)
Thanks scuzzy for your enthusiasm and encouragement I was totally shagged after the 10days here is a photo that all and sundry think is photo shopped.

Once again SS has delivered a great trip. Got to surf some unreal waves that will remain nameless. Josh did an outstanding job getting us to the best and least crowded breaks. Also his photography is outstanding. Want to give a shout out to all the crew. Captain Jap is a master seaman. To Arman, Nas, and Rizky thanks for looking out for us and always having a smile while taking us to surf in the tender. Bujang is a legend, constantly in motion, fixing dings, keeping an eye on everything and taking me fishing. We caught a lot of fish. Potato you are a master in the kitchen. Best food yet on any SS charter I’ve been on! Can’t wait to go on a trip next year.

Dear Scuzz and Danny,
I just wanted to say thanks for an incredible experience on the Mahogany mid january 2016. We had some great waves and great times while aboard. The wave forecast was fair, but Scuzz put us in the most ideal spot everyday. We scored! Uncrowded days at Maccas, Greenbush, Rag’s etc. Amazing.
The crew killed it too. Captain Chap, Shugu, Uncu, Randy, Yanto, and a few others made it easy to transition from surf stoke to bintangs to dinner. We ate epic food courtesy of chef Yanto. It was my first SS mentawai boat trip, but will not be my last!

I just wanted to thank you for an amazing trip on the Mahogany last week. Your professionalism, experience, knowledge and desire to get everyone the best waves possible made the trip fantastic and I came home stoked refreshed and wanting to book again for the same time next year. It was also a pleasure to meet your wonderful family and I wish you and them a sensational Xmas and a healthy and safe 2016.
Thanks again Scuzz and I will talk with Turtle early next year about planning our next trip.

Dear Scuzz and Danny ,
I express my sincere gratitude for the multisensory experience of our trip. 21 days (Oct.- Nov) of pure surf, comfort, joy and entertainment. Thanks to Matt, Chupacu (Ozz), Rhoddd, Zeus Chewbacca, Fefeugono, Dr. Loko, Dudu Calvin Klein, Mano and Albino to cooperate in our happiness, “muito puta – xupaxana” . Congratulations to the whole team, strong crew (Randi , Bud, Uncu, Surju, Captain and Masters of Kitchen), memorable hospitality and care. True alliance that formed a beautiful family . Thanks to Federico (liquid barrels) for the disposal, whim and professionalism, inside & outside . Big hug to all, and God willing other trips like this happen. ” PARADISE ” – Right understanding,

A quick email regarding my trip on the Budyadahri 2-14th September.
This was my fifth boat trip, four to the Ments/Telos and one to the Maldives and my first with Sumatran Surfaris. We got lucky and ran into two swells, under the expert leadership of Eugene and AK dodged the south winds and scored epic waves. The crew were superb, cooking up too much food, running us about in the tinnies and even washing some of my clothes. I liked the boat, plenty of space in the right places and well thought out. If I could fault anything it would be perhaps just a bit more padded board storage up front.
I’d like you and Scuzz to know just how good I think Eugene and AK were as guides and hosts. Eugene provided information at all times on what was happening, going to happen, lead the lads into the surf and kept the energy levels high, offering us plenty of waves and calling people into waves they might not have taken. He’s approachable, knowledgable, good humoured and tireless. AK was a seasoned pro, keen to show the other side of boat life. Diving, swimming and village trips. Again, incredibly knowledgeable, at ease with everyone. A pleasure to talk to.
Together they worked very effectively as a team, demonstrated when a surfer from a land camp was brought aboard as no one else seemed able to help him with a serious gash to the forehead. The way they handled a confusing situation, quickly assessed their options and acted decisively, ensured the best possible outcome in what might have been otherwise had those two fellas not been there that night. Full credit due.
I do a boat trip every year, I’ll be back to SS without hesitation. I’ve got a few buddies who are waiting for my report. I hope to come back with them as well.
Thank you for the excellent fun.

Just like to say thanks for an awesome trip and all the hard work you did to make it so special for our group. As far as the crew are concerned they were sensational every one of them worked so hard to make it unforgettable and they did achieve this. Special thanks to Josh our guide the way he played chess was like no one else he just kept winning for us THANKS AGAIN JOSH. To cap you sailed the waters like no one else thanks for your great work and for keeping us all comfortable and safe. Spud well what can I say but the food you served us everyday was 1st class onya Potato your the best. Bushan, Anam and Bruam not sure of spelling for there names but they know we can’t thank them enough as they worked so hard looking after us and for the chats we had it all makes the trip so special. Well it’s nice to be home (not lol) but can’t wait to see you all again soon as you guys run one of the best charters out there and I cant imagine going with anyone else as my expectations would be so high after the Budy experience again.
Stay safe guys,
Allan King, Australia, September 2015
I have to say that we were treated as kings by your team for the two weeks we were onboard.
They were incredibly welcoming and it was a weird sensation to have everything taken care of. The boat was kept to an immaculate standard, the fridge was always full of cold beer and Other drinks. All the meals were outstanding and when you thought it couldnt get any better, potato (the cook) raised the bar again.
There was ample room on the boat and while many of my friends wondered how I would survive two weeks cramped up on a boat, that was never the case. The sleeping area was roomy and there were many places you could go to and have your own space.
Josh, our guide, was a wealth of knowledge and was always on the hunt for uncrowded waves. We found these regularly and got some awesome breaks that catered for all surf levels.
Having been a a first timer, some advice would be… Halve the clothes that you pack, take a mix of boards including something that will fire on the smaller days. Take a long sleeve rash shirt for the sun but also the small bites from jellyfish. I took a surf hat and that was great for the middle of the day surf. Zinc was also a must.
Watch out if travelling via Kuala Lumper. The accommodation we stayed at wouldn’t allow surfboards on its shuttle bus and the airport train that takes you from one airport to the other also won’t take boards.
Lastly if you’re thinking of going on a Sumatra Surfarii trip – do it, you will have no regrets and I can assure you that you’ll go more than once. I would not go with any other tour company.

Dear Danny and Scuzz,
After a week and a half at work I now look back on an amazing and special surf trip. Special because always in our thoughts is our mate David Walker who died last year at Point Leo surfing with his son Joey. Big Dave, aka the Ginger Clown was with us in spirit on this trip.
We breathed a sigh of relief when our 10 board bags all arrived at Padang Airport however our joy was short lived when 7 of our bags failed to arrive. We called Scuzz who settled us down and guided us through the lost baggage process and arranged for his boys to pick up our bags which thankfully arrived on the next flight. So after a brief delay we set off on the mighty Mahogany. We were all blown away by what a fantastic vessel she is. The attention to detail and the luxury items such as massive TV, various eating and relaxation areas, personalised numbered towels, stacked fridges etc all made it a great place to spend 14 nights on. The food was incredibly fresh, varied and delicious. The crew were such a great bunch of happy accommodating blokes who worked tirelessly from well before sunrise to the close of play to ensure we were well fed, boards collected and put away, snapped boards and dings fixed, rooms cleaned, beds made, old tired bodies massaged, shuttled to and from the pumping waves, took photos etc….we were very well looked after. The surf was ridiculously good. The end of day 2 felt like we had been surfing for 5 days. After 4 days we were close to being surfed out. There was little let up. The waves kept pumping and we had to keep surfing. After 13 days of surf we flew home in a surfed out comatosed state. As always Scuzz kept weaving his magic and making the right call to find the best waves with the empty line ups. We got some great waves to ourselves and surfed some of the world famous breaks with a handful of guys out. We surfed 16 different breaks! Thanks Scuzz for the stories, the history and geology lessons, the pep talks before the surfs and the chats you had with the boys. Your passion for your work is obvious and infectious. You run a great show. Also thankyou Scuzz for helping us pay tribute to Dave Walker, the Ginger Clown, in the form of a small plaque on the wall in Mahogany’s galley. Our group was diverse in age (32-57) and surfing ability, yet all had a great time on the boat and in the water. This was my 3rd trip with Sumatran Surfariis and they just keep getting better. On behalf of the boys, thanks for an amazing experience on the mighty Hog. Continue having fun chasing the best waves on the planet.
On behalf of Yappa, Browndog, Adrian, Jim, Addsy, Dylan, Benny, Mick and Jon.

Our good mate Dave Devlin, who was on a 16-nighter on Budyadahri with Bevo in August, is still reeling from his trip. He’s sent us several pics and stories, basically showing how hard it is to adjust to the real world after more than 2 weeks of sheer awesomeness. Here’s one recent excerpt:
“what a trip
the guys are depressed
we’re not losers
it’s post-epic-best ever-trip-of-a-lifetime depression
which will pass…
i’m guessing about one f*cking year though”
However, none of the images or emails quite did it justice until he sent us this audio file. I think it gives a pretty good idea of just how much taking a trip like this with the right crew on the right boat can change someone’s life. Please note there are a few swear words in it, but it wouldn’t have been the same if we edited them out – haha.
Thanks again, Dave and Crew, and we look forward to having you all back again soon! (Australia, September, 2014)
Thanks SS for the most awesome trip of our lives. 2 weeks aboard Southern Cross with pumping uncrowded surf every single day. All the crew were top notch and became more like friends by the first week. Aki’s 6th sense wave choice, Deddy’s amazing meals, Willy’s tender skills and classic humour, Fery’s attention to detail in every aspect of the boat, and Daniels smooth skills as guide – what a fantastic and talented and easy going guy. I could go on all day. Can’t wait to go back again in a couple of years time and do it all again. Sumwa ini bagus – everything is awesome!
