The national currency is Indonesian Rupiah. In Padang and the islands this is the only accepted currency. However, you will require US$35 for your 30-day travel visa upon arrival, and it is advised to have this payment in USD ready prior to arrival, as it will greatly expedite the customs process. US$ & AU$ can be exchanged at the Padang airport or the SS office. To purchase souvenirs from one of the many “floating” gift shops (canoe) you will need Indonesian Rupiah, and usually your guide has enough change if you need to swap some IDR out from him. If you would like to tip your crew, it is acceptable to do so in IDR, USD, AUD, or EUR. Your guide will pool the funds and distribute them evenly amongst the crew.
