We have named her Mahogany in honor of the beautiful deep red colored timber found throughout Indonesia and used abundantly in her build, especially in her interior. However, rain and sun can cause Mahogany wood to bend over time, so for the exterior of the boat, we have used mostly teak, another beautiful hardwood found all over Indonesia. And for the hull we have used the traditional ironwood, a wood so strong and hard, that it’s hard to even get a nail into it. The design of the hull is incredibly strong, as we’ve incorporated more ribs, thicker keel and a different caulking system of bark to enhance durability. The shavings taken off the planks are used in a fiberglass glue mix to add to bolt strength and make the most of every part of the timber cut.
The super structure of Mahogany isn’t quite your classic looking old sailing ship. In addition to the traditional hull, we’ve added twin 280hp engines. We have stayed with a single main mast and not added a mizzen mast as we charter in an area of often calm winds. We will have the ability to fly two sails which aids in stability and is a great buzz to be pushed by the winds of the area. And there are more personal touches than can be listed that we’ve incorporated to make this a fantastic authentic and modern vessel. We’ve taken our 16+ years experience in building modifying 8 different boats into great surf charter boats, and put all those lessons learned into making Mahogany truly something special.
Down below we’ve got big, comfortable beds that chilled by air conditioning at night, yet have fresh air flow thru in the day, There is plenty of stowage for all your gear and smaller secure spaces for your personal items. Subtle LED lighting allows you to get up and move around at night without tripping over in the dark, yet isn’t bright enough to affect sleep, similar to airlines. We have 6 separate double cabins as well as a larger 8-man dorm. This gives so many different options for couples, privacy, big communal groups, etc. The boat has a total of four bathrooms all on a continuous salt water flow system, instead of a holding tank, which keeps things fresh and eliminates odors that can occur in rough conditions.
We’ve done everything possible to ensure your comfort and pleasure on Mahogany. All our ladders are extra wide and a low gradient to aid in safety and stability while at sea. We have a main poop deck area to comfortably seat 14 people for meals, drinks and laughs. This outdoor area is open to breezes, with a fridge, stereo and views over the sea to heighten the experience. If the weather comes in, we have the ability to drop specially made tarps to block the rain, while still allowing a breeze through. Or, you can choose to move indoors to the spacious saloon, where we also have plenty of space to seat everyone. The air conditioned salon has huge U shaped area of safety glass windows which is great for communicating and checking out conditions. A TV, stereo, library and drinks fridges are also present in the salon.
Back outside, we have large day bed area outside that captures all the breeze, yet is shaded and has a view of the surf. Above this we have another deck you can use to stretch, chill out or watch the stars at night. We’ve also added a deck area to our large bowsprit with great views and another separate area to hang out and hopefully watch dolphins ride the bow wake.
And, of course, regardless of all this luxury, the main point of your trip is surfing. Your boards and board bags are stored in shaded, easy to access areas. However, you needn’t lift too many fingers, as our crew will usually pull the board out for you and get it ready for you in the speedboat. We have a large tender that is accessed off the side of Mahogany, which is a much easier and safer process than off the stern. A second smaller tender will be used for day to day surfing at the wave we are anchored next to. The two tenders are great for splitting up groups, fishing and are extremely helpful in the event of an evacuation or emergency.
Safety has won out over time and money for everything we have done. We have ripped many parts of the boat out and re-done them to ensure a safety standard we are satisfied with, a standard far beyond the regulations of the country. We want you to enjoy all the luxuries of your trip on Mahogany, and part of that is knowing you are in good hands, and knowing you can go for a surf and rest assured we’re doing everything possible to look after your safety.
